Fatigue & Herbal Tonics

When Should Students Preparing for Exams Take Herbal Tonics?

Students preparing for exams should have their stamina, digestion, sleep, and tension checked together. It is important to prepare herbal tonics according to constitution and timing.

As exams approach, there are things parents and students most often bring up in the clinic. They say that after cutting back on sleep to study, the body feels heavy, the stomach hurts when they are nervous, and the mind does not feel clear. During this period, it is more important to maintain a rhythm the body can withstand than to simply increase study time.

Breakfast and Sleep Are the Basics

Condition management for students preparing for exams does not start with anything grand. If you skip breakfast, it is easy to feel foggy and sensitive in the morning, and students with weaker digestion are more likely to have heartburn or abdominal pain. Even if the amount is not large, we recommend the habit of starting the day with gentle foods such as warm porridge, rice, eggs, or tofu.

Sleep is the same. Staying up all night may seem to increase study time right away, but the next day concentration can become disrupted, and headaches, dizziness, and fatigue may continue. As exams get closer, it is better not to greatly change your wake-up and bedtime.

Herbal Tonics Should Match Constitution and Symptoms

Herbal tonics for students preparing for exams use herbs intended to support energy and help with recovery from fatigue. For example, herbs such as ginseng, astragalus root, and angelica root are often reviewed in Korean medicine when evaluating weakness, fatigue, and poor complexion. However, even with the same fatigue, prescriptions differ for students who tend to have heat, those with weak digestion, and those who get diarrhea when nervous.

When I decide on an herbal tonic, I do not look only at height and weight. I also check appetite, stool condition, menstrual cycle, the temperature of the hands and feet, sleep onset time, and the degree of test anxiety. Reinforcement that does not fit the body can become a burden, such as causing bloating or making sleep uncomfortable, so it is safer to decide after a consultation.

Check Gongjindan and Uwhang Cheongsimwon in Advance

Gongjindan can be considered when energy is low and fatigue comes easily, and Uwhang Cheongsimwon can be considered when severe tension causes palpitations or the mind does not settle. However, we do not recommend taking them for the first time the day before or the day of an exam. To observe the body’s response, it is better to decide whether to take them and how often through a consultation at least 1–2 weeks before an important schedule.

You should also avoid taking several over-the-counter products on your own at the same time. If you increase caffeinated drinks, supplements, and herbal medicine all at once, palpitations or digestive discomfort may occur. If you are taking any medications, do not stop them on your own, and be sure to tell us during your consultation.

We Recommend a Consultation in These Cases

  • When fatigue does not improve even after sleeping and you feel severely drained every afternoon
  • When abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation recurs when you are nervous
  • When headaches, dizziness, or decreased appetite interfere with the flow of studying
  • When test anxiety often causes palpitations or hand tremors
  • When stamina management is needed because an interview or essay test follows an important exam

However, if symptoms that are different from usual appear, such as sudden paralysis, decreased consciousness, slurred speech, or an extreme headache, you should call 119 or go to the emergency room before visiting a Korean medicine clinic. We also recommend receiving medical care if recurring headaches or dizziness, or severe depressed mood, continues.

The care examinees need is not about forcing the body to keep going, but about reducing the body’s burden so they can show the ability they have built through studying. Herbal tonics are one option, and preparation can feel more comfortable when we also look at daily rhythm, meals, and sleep.
