02WHY IT HAPPENS

Infertility and miscarriage: what happens in the body

Infertility is a condition in which pregnancy does not occur for more than 1 year despite regular intercourse without contraception. The cause may be in the woman or the man, so preparing together as a couple is the first step. As marriage and childbirth are delayed and exposure to environmental hormones increases, more people are struggling with infertility.

  • 01

    Female Factors

Ovarian, tubal, uterine, and cervical factors should be checked, but many people who visit a Korean medicine clinic have unexplained causes. In Korean medicine, we look not only for structural causes but also for decreased function and provide personalized treatment.

  • 02

    Male Factors

We evaluate sperm count, motility, and morphology. Even when a semen analysis shows no abnormality, pregnancy can still be difficult, so we help enrich essence (精) and supplement the qi of the heart and kidneys to support the production of essence and blood.

  • 03

    Before Your Treatment Procedure

As pregnancies at advanced maternal age have increased, more people are preparing for IVF. Intrauterine insemination is known to have a pregnancy rate of about 10%, IVF about 25%, and IVF in women in their 40s about 10%. This is why it is important to care for egg and sperm quality and the implantation environment even before the procedure.

  • 04

Changes in the Body After Miscarriage

Miscarriage is experienced by 1 in 6 women and can leave significant aftereffects on the body and mind. After miscarriage, symptoms of blood stasis such as postpartum wind syndrome, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, changes in menstrual volume, endometrial damage, and pain, as well as decreased energy, may occur.

  • 05

Recurrent Miscarriage · Repeated Implantation Failure

This refers to repeated miscarriages before 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is known that after 1 miscarriage, the chance of another miscarriage is 15%, and after 3 miscarriages, it rises to about 30%. Korean medicine includes Antae (安胎) treatment, which aims to help keep the fetus stable and supports the body so it does not react too sensitively to the embryo as something unfamiliar.

03WHY TREAT EARLY

Do Not Delay Recovery After Miscarriage

If the body is not cared for after miscarriage and is left alone, aftereffects may remain, and the risk of infertility or miscarriage in the next pregnancy may increase. If you had dilation and curettage, it is important to check whether lochia and bleeding stop well, the endometrium recovers, and menstruation returns to normal. Recent studies have reported that the pregnancy rate was highest within 6 months after miscarriage, so it is important to help the body recover well during this period.

Symptoms that may appear together

  • Postpartum wind syndrome
  • Dysmenorrhea · Irregular menstruation
  • Changes in menstrual volume
  • Endometrial damage
  • Decreased energy
  • Risk of infertility · miscarriage in the next pregnancy

04DIAGNOSIS

How We Assess Each Partner’s Condition

  • Iris Genetic Constitution Test
    TEST 01

    Iris Genetic Constitution Test

We comprehensively assess genetic strengths and weaknesses, constitutional imbalances, emotional responses, and autonomic nervous system balance. We evaluate whether the uterus is constitutionally weak, and whether the balance of cold and heat (寒熱), circulation, and stress are having an effect. You can be tested comfortably even if you come wearing contact lenses.

  • Ryodoraku Meridian Function Test
    TEST 02

    Ryodoraku Meridian Function Test

We measure meridian function at major acupuncture points on the hands and feet to understand overall energy level and the deficiency or excess (虛實) pattern of the condition. When energy is too low, intercourse and pregnancy are often difficult, and most people with frequent miscarriage show patterns of deficiency in both qi and blood.

  • Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Autonomic Nervous System Test
    TEST 03

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Autonomic Nervous System Test

We check the activity and balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. Infertility and miscarriage are strongly affected by stress, depression, and tension, so stabilizing the autonomic nervous system is important.

  • Cellular Health Immunity Test (InBody S10)
    TEST 04

Cellular Health Immunity Test (InBody S10)

We assess cellular function, immunity, circulation, nutritional status, body water, body fat, and muscle loss together. By checking energy and nutritional deficiency or excess, fluid balance, and body fat percentage, we look for causes of infertility and miscarriage.

We carefully discuss how you have been preparing for pregnancy, as well as your past health history. Please bring any existing test results, such as blood tests. If you come together as a couple, the husband can consult with Dr. Hansung Ryu, Chief Director, and the wife with Dr. Seungwon Baek, Director, separately and together.

05TREATMENT

We Care for Both the “Seed” and the “Field”

To prepare for pregnancy, both partners should be free of disease, have abundant qi and blood, and have good physical strength. We replenish deficient qi and blood, clear accumulated waste, warm the body, and help the mind feel at ease. We provide Bogung (補宮) treatment to strengthen uterine and ovarian function together with Bowi (補胃) treatment to support qi and blood circulation.

1:1 Customized Herbal Medicine for Each Spouse
01

1:1 Customized Herbal Medicine for Each Spouse

For the wife, the principle is to harmonize menstruation, replenish qi and blood, and stabilize stress and anxiety related to infertility. For the husband, we help enrich essence (精), supplement the qi of the heart and kidneys, and support vitality and the production of essence and blood. Herbs are added or adjusted (加減) according to constitution and symptoms.

02

Diminished Ovarian Function · Pregnancy Preparation at Advanced Maternal Age

If advanced age, diminished ovarian function, or premature ovarian failure is suspected, Nokyong (Deer Antler, 鹿茸), which supports reproductive capacity in the early stage, may be needed. When AMH is low, treatment aims to help improve egg quality by supporting hormonal balance in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and follicular development. We help strengthen the endometrium for implantation and warm the uterus to support blood flow.

Prescription Tailored to a Pregnancy Preparation Plan
03

Prescription Tailored to a Pregnancy Preparation Plan

We prescribe in a personalized way depending on whether you are preparing for natural pregnancy, intrauterine insemination, or IVF. Usually, the body, eggs, and sperm are prepared starting 3 months before the procedure, and even when the procedure is very near, during ovarian stimulation, or before and after egg retrieval, treatment to strengthen the endometrium may be provided.

  • What is commonly called an “implantation decoction” is not a fixed prescription name; prescriptions that support implantation are composed according to the body’s condition at that time
04

Preventive Treatment for Recurrent Miscarriage

For both partners, we strengthen reproductive function to care for sperm and egg quality, help increase endometrial receptivity, and help prevent an overly sensitive immune response. We help clear the blood and warm the uterus to improve circulation problems caused by blood stasis, and when preparing for the next pregnancy, we use herbal medicine to support implantation.

05

Post-Miscarriage Recovery Care

Miscarriage, like childbirth, can deplete qi and blood, so recovery is needed. Starting as soon as possible is favorable for preventing aftereffects and supporting uterine recovery, and even if you had dilation and curettage, it is advisable to begin herbal medicine treatment as soon as possible. Treatment for uterine recovery and replenishing qi and blood usually lasts about 1 month.

Acupuncture · Moxibustion · Thermotherapy
06

Acupuncture · Moxibustion · Thermotherapy

Consistent acupuncture and moxibustion treatment helps support blood flow and ease the pressure and tension caused by infertility. Acupuncture points on the abdomen, back, arms, and legs are used to help restore uterine and ovarian function, and the uterus is warmed with smokeless (無煙) large moxibustion on the abdomen and Aroma Heat Therapy.

Most patients take herbal medicine while receiving acupuncture and moxibustion treatment 2–3 times a week. You can use the National Happiness Card.

06TREATMENT STEPS

How Treatment Proceeds

  1. STEP 1

    In-Depth Consultation for Couples

We review the pregnancy preparation process and health history, and look for functional causes through testing, pulse diagnosis, and abdominal diagnosis. We analyze whether both qi and blood are deficient, whether the uterus is too cold or has deficiency heat, whether Seupdam (Damp-Phlegm, 濕痰) is excessive, or whether stress and anger have led to qi stagnation called giul (氣鬱).

  2. STEP 2

Separate and Together as a Couple, Bowi (補胃) · Bogung (補宮) Treatment

We replenish deficient qi and blood, and care for uterine and ovarian function as well as sperm and egg condition. If you are recovering after miscarriage, we prioritize uterine recovery and replenishing qi and blood.

  3. STEP 3

Ongung (Warming the Uterus) Treatment with Procedures

We help keep the uterus warm to support menstrual blood discharge and blood flow, and manage the body consistently with herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, and heat therapy. This can be combined not only with natural pregnancy preparation but also with intrauterine insemination or IVF schedules.
