Treatment Philosophy

So Your Body and Mind Can Feel at Ease, and You Can Have More Healthy Days

This is the treatment philosophy that Hoechundang, which began in Andong Hahoe Village in 1904, has upheld for four generations.

Treatment Philosophy

01OUR STORY

The Values Hoechundang Has Upheld for More Than 100 Years

We treat each person with care so that the body and mind of those who visit us can feel at ease, and we help them have more healthy days. We consider it a physician’s duty to find and treat the root of illness, to take one more careful look, and to care for the body and mind of people in pain. We have upheld this teaching from our predecessors for four generations.

We will always do our utmost so that each day may become more comfortable for those who visit Hoechundang.

02HIGHLIGHTS

1. For Chronic Conditions of Unknown Cause, We Look for Answers in the Stomach

Irregular routines, lack of sleep, instant and delivery foods, spicy and salty foods, excessive drinking, and smoking can easily upset the stomachs of people today. When the stomach is damaged, signals appear not only in digestion but throughout the whole body.

  • 01

    Digestion

The stomach feels heavy and uncomfortable, indigestion occurs often, and gas builds up.

  • 02

    Whole Body

When this continues for a long time, dizziness and headaches may occur often, and the body may feel heavy, stiff, and tired.

  • 03

    Gut and Skin

The abdomen may feel bubbly, diarrhea and constipation may occur often, and skin conditions of unknown cause may also develop.

  • 04

    The Female Body

As circulation declines, the body may swell and the abdomen may feel cold, and menstrual irregularities, vaginal discharge, and chronic inflammation may occur.

Many people are told their symptoms are “stress-related” or “nervous” because no cause is found despite multiple tests. At Hoechundang, we often see these cases as times when an upset stomach has reduced the supply and circulation of qi and blood (氣血: energy and nourishment), weakening immunity.

03PROCESS

The Vicious Cycle of the Stomach and Chronic Conditions

This is why even foods or health functional foods said to be good for the body may instead cause heartburn or diarrhea. At Hoechundang, we focus on the spleen and stomach (脾胃: digestive system), the foundation of vital energy, while also examining issues in other organs, to help restore energy and immunity.

  1. 01

    Stomach Damage

Lifestyle and dietary habits weaken stomach function.

  2. 02

Qi and Blood Deficiency · Impaired Circulation

Because nutrients are not absorbed sufficiently, the supply and circulation of qi and blood decline.

  3. 03

    Reduced Immunity

The strength to face illness weakens, allowing chronic conditions to continue.

  4. 04

    Autonomic Nervous System Imbalance

The longer the illness lasts, the more the mind becomes exhausted, and the balance of the autonomic nervous system breaks down.

  5. 05

    Stomach Becomes Upset Again

The exhausted body and mind create a vicious cycle that upsets the stomach again.

2. We Choose the Treatment the Patient Truly Needs Together

First-generation practitioner Ryu Jong-woo began practicing medicine while witnessing people suffering under Japanese colonial oppression. Second-generation practitioner Ryu Si-cheol kept medicinal herbs clean at the Hoechundang herbal medicine shop in Pohang and selected good-quality herbs. Continuing that teaching, we follow honesty as our principle and choose comfortable treatments together that are medically necessary and suited to each patient’s circumstances.

3. We Accompany You Through the Long Treatment Process So the Spring of Health May Return

Hoechun (回春) means “the spring of my health returns,” that is, recovery of health. The longer a chronic condition has been present, the longer treatment can take, and there may be times when you want to give up along the way. That is why we explain how much more treatment may be needed and when and how improvement may be expected, and we stay with you to the end.
