How To Manage Chronic Atrophic Gastritis

Chronic atrophic gastritis is a condition in which the stomach lining has become thin due to long-repeated inflammation. Symptom relief, recovery of stomach function, and lifestyle management are all needed together.

In the clinic, I often hear patients say, “My digestion is always slow, and I have heartburn, but I was told on endoscopy that I have chronic atrophic gastritis.” Some people think it is just a brief episode of indigestion and keep taking digestive aids, only to have the discomfort continue for a long time. Chronic atrophic gastritis is a condition in which repeated inflammation of the stomach lining makes the lining thinner and weakens its function, so rather than only suppressing symptoms, we also need to create an environment that helps the stomach recover.

Changes That Occur When The Stomach Lining Becomes Thin

The stomach lining is an important barrier that protects the stomach from food, stomach acid, and external irritants. When chronic inflammation continues for a long time, this barrier weakens, and heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, abdominal bloating, and post-meal fullness may recur. In people with atrophic changes, mucosal changes such as intestinal metaplasia may be present as well, so regular gastroscopy follow-up is also important.

We Look Together At Why It Keeps Recurring

Gastritis often does not occur for just one reason. Irregular meals, eating too quickly, late-night eating, drinking and smoking, overwork and tension, and spicy or salty foods can overlap and increase the burden on the stomach lining. During consultation, I look together at the location of pain, changes after meals, stool condition, sleep and stress, and even medications currently being taken.

The Direction Of Korean Medicine Treatment

In Korean medicine, long-standing digestive disorders are viewed as a state in which uncomfortable symptoms appear on the surface, while digestion and overall energy are weakened internally. During periods of severe heartburn, Korean medicine antacids and similar options may be considered to reduce discomfort from stomach acid irritation, while treatment to support stomach motility and digestive strength is provided together. To protect the lining and reduce repeated inflammation, prescriptions tailored to the patient’s constitution and symptom pattern are needed.

Lifestyle Management Is The Foundation Of Treatment

  • It is better not to skip meals and to eat small amounts regularly rather than overeating.
  • I recommend reducing spicy and salty foods, fried foods, excessive drinking, and late-night meals, as they may irritate the stomach lining.
  • Do not lie down right after eating; a light walk can help stomach emptying.
  • It is best to avoid coffee and carbonated drinks on days when heartburn is severe.
  • If you are taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers, antithrombotic agents, or similar medications, do not stop them on your own, and consult your medical team.

When We Recommend Medical Care

If indigestion and heartburn repeat for more than 2 weeks, or if you have been told you have atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia on endoscopy, I recommend receiving medical care. If you have black stools, vomiting with blood, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or severe abdominal pain, you need to be checked at a medical institution without delay. If emergency symptoms such as sudden decreased consciousness or paralysis occur, you should call 119 or go to the emergency room first.

Chronic atrophic gastritis is not a condition that looks only at today’s heartburn. It is important to reduce lifestyle factors that irritate the stomach lining, examine weakened digestive function, and maintain balanced care without missing necessary tests. If your discomfort has lasted a long time, rather than enduring it alone, please consider finding an approach together that fits your current stomach condition and constitution.
