After seeing patients for many years in the clinic, I find that the path to maintaining health is closer than we may think. Before looking for good medicine, I first look at sleep times, eating habits, mental tension, and the degree of movement. Yangsaeng, or nourishing life, in Korean medicine is not a special practice, but a way of living that cares for the body so strain does not accumulate, by aligning the body’s rhythm with the flow of nature.
The body follows the rhythms of the seasons and the day
The human body is affected by day and night and by the changes of the four seasons. If a pattern of staying awake late into the night and skipping breakfast is repeated, the balance of the Digestive System and autonomic nerves can easily be disturbed. I recommend going to bed and waking up at as consistent a time as possible, and adjusting activity level and clothing to the season.
Emotions also consume the body’s energy
Emotions such as joy, anger, worry, sadness, surprise, and fear come to everyone. The issue is not the emotions themselves, but a state in which tension does not ease for a long time. Habits such as slowing your breathing, taking a short walk, and pausing work for a moment can also help people who often have indigestion or fatigue.
Eat regularly and simply
Skipping breakfast and eating a large amount in the evening burdens the stomach. As you age, it is better to reduce greasy foods, excessive alcohol, and overly spicy or salty foods. Foods that are too hot or too cold can also cause stomach discomfort when repeated, so it is important to chew slowly and eat in a comfortable atmosphere.
Exercise and herbal medicine should be chosen to fit your body
For exercise, it is better to choose an amount you can do consistently rather than doing a lot. Start with movements you can attach to daily life, such as a light walk after meals or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Herbal medicine and Korean herbal teas should also be chosen after considering constitution, current symptoms, and medications you are taking, and it is safer to avoid combining multiple health functional foods or folk remedies.
Consultation is recommended in these cases
- When fatigue lasts a long time and recovery is slow even after rest
- When heartburn, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation recurs
- When weight decreases without a clear reason or appetite clearly drops
- When there are black stools, bloody stools, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms suddenly worsen
- When you are already taking medications and want to add herbal medicine or health supplements
Especially if you are taking prescription medication, do not stop it on your own; please consult your medical team. If an emergency is suspected, such as severe chest pain, decreased consciousness, or paralysis symptoms, call 119 or go to the emergency room before visiting a Korean medicine clinic.
Health is not changed all at once; it is closer to something you build little by little each day. Start by keeping your meals and sleep regular, not holding on to emotions for too long, and continuing movement that suits your body. When needed, we will work with you through care to find supportive methods that fit your current condition.
