Causes of Chronic Diarrhea and Korean Medicine Management

Chronic diarrhea may occur not only because of the bowels, but also through the combined effects of decreased stamina, eating habits, and stress. Identifying the cause and receiving personalized care are important.

In the clinic, the part that patients with chronic diarrhea often find most difficult is the anxiety of not knowing when they will need to go to the bathroom. Meals, the commute, and plans to go out all become burdensome, and if this continues for a long time, both the body and mind can become exhausted. I do not view diarrhea simply as a sensitive bowel issue; I look at digestive system function, stamina, and daily rhythm together.

Chronic Diarrhea Has Many Possible Causes

When diarrhea continues for a long time, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, medication effects, inflammatory bowel disease, changes after bowel surgery, malabsorption, infections, and other factors are considered together. Even when the cause is not clear, symptoms may repeat because the bowel has become overly sensitive and digestive absorption function has weakened. Whether gastritis, reflux symptoms, or decreased appetite is present also provides important clues during care.

In Summer, Be Careful of Dehydration and Decreased Energy

In hot weather, fluid is lost through sweat, and if diarrhea occurs at the same time, dizziness, severe fatigue, and unsteadiness when standing may develop. If you cannot eat properly and nausea or abdominal discomfort continues, recovery may be slower. Rather than only drinking a lot of water, electrolyte replacement can be considered when needed, and if urine volume noticeably decreases, we recommend seeking care.

In Korean Medicine, We Look at Intestinal Strength and the Body’s Cold-Heat Balance Together

In Korean medicine, imbalanced daily care, decreased spleen-stomach function, overwork and stress, and an overall decrease in energy that occurs with aging may be factors that keep diarrhea going. The approach differs for people whose bodies easily feel cold, whose abdomen feels cold, and who repeatedly have loose stools; for people who go to the bathroom immediately when tense; and for people who often have abdominal pain and diarrhea after meals. Herbs that consider energy and digestion function, such as ginseng, astragalus root, atractylodes rhizome, and poria, or warming herbs such as dried ginger and cinnamon bark, may be reviewed depending on constitution and condition. However, herbs such as aconite require diagnosis and preparation by a professional, and self-administration should be avoided.

Lifestyle Management Starts With Reducing Irritants

  • Reduce greasy foods and very spicy or cold foods during periods when symptoms are severe.
  • Alcohol, smoking, and coffee can stimulate bowel movement, so regulate their frequency and amount.
  • Avoid eating quickly or overeating, and eat at regular times.
  • On days when diarrhea is frequent, replenish fluids and electrolytes and take a break from strenuous exercise.
  • Even if you suspect diarrhea is due to a medication you are taking, do not stop it on your own; consult the prescribing Medical Team.

When We Recommend Consultation

  • When diarrhea repeats for more than 2~3 weeks or weight decreases
  • When bloody stool, black stool, fever, or nighttime diarrhea occurs together
  • When dehydration causes dry mouth, decreased urination, or severe dizziness
  • When abdominal pain is severe or vomiting continues, making it difficult to eat
  • If you feel you may collapse due to sudden paralysis, decreased consciousness, or severe dehydration, use 119 or the emergency room first.

If you simply endure chronic diarrhea, it can easily narrow your range of daily life and lower your stamina. By reducing factors that irritate the bowel and looking at your digestive function and constitution together, the management direction becomes clearer. If repeated diarrhea is making daily life uncomfortable, we recommend not judging it alone, but reviewing your current symptoms, medications, and eating habits together.
