In the treatment room, I often hear patients say, “I thought it was acne and managed it that way, but it keeps getting red and stinging.” If your face feels oily yet dry, and flaking and itching keep recurring, it is hard to view it as a simple breakout alone. Seborrheic dermatitis may improve and then easily flare again when daily rhythms are disrupted, so an approach that looks at both the surface of the Skin and the condition inside the body is important.
Even if it looks like acne, the pattern is different
Seborrheic dermatitis is a Chronic Skin Condition in which inflammation repeatedly occurs in areas with high sebum production. Redness and flaking can appear around the nose, between the eyebrows, on the cheeks, chin, and around the ears, and stinging or itching may accompany it. If it occurs on the scalp, dandruff-like flakes, itching, and red inflammation may continue, so it is best not to dismiss the condition lightly.
Why does it keep recurring?
Inflammation that appears on the Skin often does not have just one cause. When lack of sleep, overwork, stress, alcohol, irritating eating habits, and irregular routines overlap, sebum and heat sensations can easily increase. If decreased immune balance, fungal overgrowth, Digestion status, and reduced circulation are also involved, redness and itching may last longer.
Steroid use should be approached carefully
Topical medications prescribed when inflammation is severe can be helpful in some cases. However, applying them for a long time on your own, or stopping suddenly once symptoms improve and then repeating them whenever symptoms worsen again, can make the Skin more sensitive. If you are already using medication, do not stop it on your own, and I recommend reviewing your current Skin condition and duration of use together with the Medical Team.
In Korean medicine, we look at both heat and circulation
When I see seborrheic dermatitis, I do not look only at redness on the Skin surface, but also at why heat is concentrating in the face and scalp. If circulation in the body declines and Waste Product Elimination is not smooth, heat sensations in the upper body can remain for a long time. Depending on constitution and symptoms, we combine herbal medicine, acupuncture treatment, and topical Skin care to guide treatment toward lowering inflammatory responses and reducing recurrence.
When Consultation Is Recommended
- When facial redness and flaking recur for more than 2 weeks
- When scratching due to itching causes oozing or scabs
- When scalp inflammation, dandruff, and itching continue for a long time
- When redness and stinging do not settle even after acne treatment
- When symptoms quickly become severe again despite repeated use of topical medications
Lifestyle Management is also part of treatment. Avoid rubbing too hard when cleansing, and during periods when symptoms are severe, it is better to reduce alcohol, late-night meals, and greasy foods. Sleeping on a regular schedule and making time to relieve stress can also help Skin recovery. Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition that requires long-term observation, but once you understand your body’s pattern, the direction of management becomes much clearer.
