What to Check Before Taking Gongjindan During Menopause

During menopause, hot flushes, palpitations, and insomnia may occur together. For Gongjindan, it is important to determine after a consultation whether it suits your constitution and symptoms.

In the consultation room, when I discuss menopause, I often hear the question, “I suddenly feel heat rising and cannot sleep. Can I take Gongjindan?” Menopause is a time when the body’s regulatory ability changes along with changes in ovarian function. Because several symptoms can overlap, such as facial flushing, palpitations, insomnia, fatigue, hair loss, and vaginal dryness, it is better to assess your current physical condition rather than dismissing it simply as “something that happens with age.”

Menopausal Symptoms Are Not Only a Heat Problem

In Korean medicine, we often see a pattern during menopause in which heat rises upward while coldness accumulates below. We understand this as an upper-heat, lower-cold pattern: the face may feel flushed, while the hands, feet, or lower abdomen feel cold; the mind may become more sensitive; and sleep may become lighter. In these cases, an approach that simply lowers heat may not be enough.

When can Gongjin-dan be considered?

Gongjin-dan is a prescription based on ingredients such as deer antler tips, Angelica gigas, musk, and Cornus officinalis, and it is used when we assess both decreased vital energy and issues with the circulation of qi and blood. During menopause, if fatigue is severe, recovery feels reduced, and body heat circulation is not smooth, we can review it as an option after a consultation. However, it is not a prescription used in the same way for all menopausal symptoms.

The same name can have different compositions

The actual nature of Gongjin-dan can vary depending on the type and quality of its key medicinal ingredients and how it is prepared. In particular, some products contain other aromatic medicinal ingredients instead of musk, so it is difficult to choose based only on the name. The decision can differ depending on whether you have a strong heat sensation, how your digestion is, and whether you have blood pressure or heart symptoms or are taking any medications.

We check these points before taking it

  • We check whether facial flushing and palpitations are related to menopausal changes or to thyroid, heart, or blood pressure issues.
  • If insomnia, anxiety, cold sweats, or weight changes are significant, a more comprehensive evaluation is needed.
  • If you are taking medications such as hormone therapy, blood pressure medication, or anticoagulants, please do not stop them on your own and let us know.
  • If you often feel bloated or frequently have diarrhea or constipation, the way you take tonic herbal medicine should also be adjusted.

We recommend a consultation in these cases

If menopausal symptoms interfere with daily life and sleep, if heat sensations and chills recur, or if vaginal dryness, joint pain, or mood changes occur together, we recommend that you seek care. If you have sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, paralysis on one side of the body, slurred speech, or decreased consciousness, do not assume these are menopausal symptoms; call 119 or go to the emergency room first.

Gongjin-dan is known as a prescription that supports the body, but the important question is, “Does my body need it right now?” When I evaluate menopausal symptoms, I look at the location of heat, the flow of qi and blood, digestion, and sleep together. Rather than choosing and taking a product on your own, finding an approach that fits your constitution and symptoms through care is a safer starting point.
