Fatigue & Herbal Tonics

Summer Chronic Fatigue and How to Take Herbal Tonics

When heat, humidity, and large daily temperature differences overlap, fatigue may last longer. Herbal tonics should be chosen after checking your constitution and digestion.

Around the time summer is coming to an end, I often hear this in the treatment room: “Even after sleeping, I do not feel refreshed, my head feels foggy, and my appetite is not what it used to be.” When heat and humidity continue for a long time and the temperature changes greatly after rain, the body uses a lot of energy to regulate body temperature. If overwork, irregular meals, and insufficient sleep are added to this, simple tiredness can linger.

Summer Fatigue Is Viewed Together With the Digestive System

In Korean medicine, fatigue is not seen simply as a state of lacking energy. When you sweat a lot from the heat, eat and drink more cold foods and beverages, and humidity from the rainy season is added, digestive function often becomes unsettled first. If post-meal fullness, loose stools, and decreased appetite are present, we should also consider reducing the burden on the stomach before replenishing vitality.

For Herbal Tonics, Your Current Condition Comes Before the Name

There are many herbal tonic prescriptions, including Chongmyungtang, Bojungikgitang, Sipjeondaebotang, Kyungokgo, and Gongjindan. Even for the same fatigue, the needed prescription may differ for people with many late nights and high stress, those who eat little and become easily drained, or those whose recovery is slow. It is advisable to decide on the form, such as decoction or pills, after checking age, daily rhythm, sleep, digestive strength, medications being taken, and constitution together.

When Can Gongjindan Be Considered?

Gongjindan is a traditional prescription based on musk, deer antler, angelica root, cornus fruit, and other ingredients, and related content has been passed down in Donguibogam. There are reported findings from studies related to chronic fatigue, reduced vitality, and recovery capacity, but it is not a prescription that fits all fatigue in the same way. It is commonly taken in a form of once daily use, but the dose and duration should be adjusted depending on physical strength, digestive capacity, and existing conditions.

Helpful Points to Check Before Taking It

  • Check when the fatigue started and whether you recover after sleeping.
  • Check whether decreased appetite, indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation is also present.
  • Tell the Medical Team about medications you are taking, such as those for high blood pressure, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, or anticoagulants.
  • Consult in advance about the possibility of pregnancy, whether you are breastfeeding, and any history of allergies.
  • Do not stop any Western medications you are taking on your own; discuss them with the Medical Team who prescribed them.

When Consultation Is Recommended

If fatigue continues for more than 2 weeks or your ability to concentrate in daily life has clearly declined, we recommend checking the signals from your body. If unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, cold sweats, black stools, or severe dizziness accompany it, it is best to seek care. If there is sudden paralysis, decreased consciousness, severe chest pain, or shortness of breath, calling 119 or going to the emergency room should come before visiting a Korean medicine clinic.

Herbal tonics are one way to care for a tired body, but the process of accurately examining your current body should come before choosing based only on a prescription name. I consider it important to look at the causes of fatigue, digestive condition, and lifestyle pattern together and build a recovery plan with less burden. If the fatigue that accumulated this summer is lasting longer, I encourage you to begin Lifestyle Management together with constitution-based care.
