Fatigue & Herbal Tonics

How to Manage Chronic Fatigue When You Feel Sleepy No Matter How Much You Sleep

If you feel tired even though you seem to have slept enough, sleep duration is not the only thing to consider. It is important to examine your constitution and deficiency patterns and choose herbal tonics carefully.

There is something I often hear in the clinic. Patients say that even after sleeping, their body feels heavy, it is hard to get up in the morning, and their concentration drops sharply in the afternoon. This kind of fatigue is often not simply a matter of willpower, but a result of sleep, nutrition, activity level, stress, and reduced recovery capacity being intertwined.

First, We Look at the Pattern of Fatigue

In Korean medicine, long-lasting fatigue is examined within the category of deficiency-taxation. Patterns differ, such as qi deficiency, in which energy is easily depleted; blood deficiency, in which complexion and recovery capacity decline; yang deficiency, with sensitivity to cold and a heavy, drooping body; and yin deficiency, accompanied by heat sensations and dryness. Even with the same fatigue, some people have weak digestion, some have poor sleep quality, and others recover slowly after overwork.

For Herbal Tonics, the Right Direction Matters More Than the Name

There are many prescriptions used for fatigue management, such as Bojungikgi-tang, Sipjeondaebo-tang, and Gongjindan. However, rather than choosing based only on the name of a prescription, it is important to check where the current weakness lies, and whether there are any medications being taken or underlying diseases. When I recommend herbal tonics, I also look at eating patterns, bowel movements, sleep, weight changes, and the stress environment.

What to Check When Considering Gongjindan

Gongjindan is a traditional prescription made into pills by kneading ingredients such as deer antler, musk, Angelica gigas root, and Cornus fruit with honey. Related content is also found in Donguibogam, and modern studies have reported findings related to oxidative stress, cerebrovascular protection, and nerve recovery. However, it is not a prescription that suits every type of fatigue in the same way, so it is necessary to assess through constitutional examination whether the pattern involves a deficiency of qi and blood.

  • For prescriptions containing musk, we check the source of the ingredient and the management standards.
  • Even individually packaged pills should be stored away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humidity.
  • If there is any possibility of pregnancy, chronic disease, or medications such as anticoagulants, be sure to let us know in advance.
  • Do not stop any medications you are taking on your own; consult your medical team.

When Consultation Is Recommended

  • When fatigue lasts for 2 weeks or longer and interferes with daily work or studies
  • When you do not feel refreshed after sleep and also have headaches, dizziness, or indigestion
  • When recovery after a Common Cold is slow or you feel that lowered immunity keeps recurring
  • If you have unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, chest pain, or shortness of breath, we recommend seeking care. For paralysis, decreased consciousness, or severe shortness of breath, call 119 or go to the emergency room first.

Fatigue is a quiet signal from the body. If fatigue is not resolved simply by sleeping more, it is good to review your lifestyle and, when needed, carefully choose a prescription that fits your constitution and deficiency pattern. When the direction of recovery is set accurately, herbal tonics can be used more safely and appropriately.
