Chronic Skin Conditions

What to check when seborrheic dermatitis keeps recurring

If redness, flaking, and itching of the face and scalp recur, it is important to look not only at skin inflammation but also at heat sensations and lifestyle factors.

Patients who come to the clinic for seborrheic dermatitis are usually exhausted from long-recurring redness, flaking, and itching. In particular, when symptoms appear in highly visible areas such as around the nose, around the eyebrows, the forehead and chin, or the scalp, not only the skin discomfort itself but also meeting people can feel burdensome. In these cases, I do not look only at the skin surface; I also assess how heat sensations rise, daily rhythm, digestion, and stress.

Inflammation that often appears in areas with more sebum

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that tends to recur in areas with heavy sebum secretion, such as the face, scalp, and chest. Redness, white or yellow flakes, itching, and stinging may appear together, and on the scalp it may look like dandruff. Even after symptoms subside, they often return after lack of sleep, overwork, alcohol, irritating foods, or seasonal changes.

Similar-looking symptoms may be a different condition

Not all facial redness and heat are seborrheic dermatitis. Rosacea, contact dermatitis, acne, and folliculitis can appear to overlap, so it is necessary to distinguish the current skin condition. Continuing to use cosmetics that do not suit your skin, strong cleansing, or frequent exfoliation can make the skin barrier more sensitive.

Korean medicine looks at the balance of heat and circulation

In Korean medicine care, along with an approach to calm chronic inflammation, we also check patterns of internal heat lingering upward, sweating and sebum, digestion and bowel movements, and sleep status. Even with the same seborrheic dermatitis, the direction of the prescription can differ for someone whose face heats up easily, someone whose symptoms worsen after fatigue, or someone whose symptoms worsen after greasy foods. When needed, we combine herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, and lifestyle management guidance, focusing on reducing the background factors that repeatedly destabilize the skin.

Lifestyle management starts with reducing irritation

  • Wash your face briefly with lukewarm water and a gentle product, and do not rub until the skin feels squeaky clean.
  • If symptoms worsen after greasy foods, spicy foods, or alcohol, try reducing them for a period of time and observe any changes.
  • If you have scalp symptoms, do not leave sweat on the scalp for long, and rinse thoroughly so no shampoo residue remains.
  • Lack of sleep and overwork can increase skin heat and itching, so make time for recovery.
  • Do not stop prescribed medications such as steroids or immunosuppressants on your own. Adjust the duration and method of use through medical care.

When Consultation Is Recommended

If redness and scaling repeat for several weeks or longer, or if oozing, crusting, or severe itching makes daily life uncomfortable, we recommend seeking care. It also needs to be checked if inflammation spreads around the eyes or is accompanied by pain or swelling. The longer a skin condition has been present, the more helpful it can be to avoid forcing rapid changes and instead reduce aggravating factors one by one while looking at the skin and the body’s recovery capacity together.

Seborrheic dermatitis affects visible areas, so it can easily make you feel impatient and distressed. However, calmly tracking the pattern of recurrence and setting a management direction that fits your constitution and lifestyle can help reduce how much the skin flares sensitively. At Hoechundang, we will look at your current skin condition together with your body’s balance and create a treatment plan that is not excessive.
