Fatigue & Herbal Tonics

Managing Chronic Fatigue That Wears You Out Every Morning

If you feel tired even after sleeping and your concentration is reduced, it is hard to dismiss this as simply a matter of willpower. Tonics, including Gongjindan, should be considered according to constitution and symptoms.

One of the expressions I hear most often in the treatment room is, “I am tired no matter how much I sleep.” If your body feels as heavy as lead in the morning, your concentration drops sharply in the afternoon, and you do not feel recovered even on days off, it is hard to attribute this simply to laziness or age. In these cases, I first look at daily rhythm, stress, digestion, and sleep quality together.

Chronic fatigue is a sign of depletion in the body

Fatigue is a signal from the body telling you to conserve energy. When there is too much work and tension continues, you may not feel refreshed even after sleep, and you may continue to tire quickly even if you eat well. If you simply push through at this point, headaches, indigestion, unstable mood, and frequent declines in condition that feel like lowered immunity may also appear.

When can Gongjindan be considered?

Gongjindan is a prescription centered on musk, nokyong (deer antler), Angelica gigas, and Cornus officinalis. In Korean medicine, it is used after assessing constitution when there is significant depletion of qi and blood and clear reduced strength, when recovery after overwork is slow, or when concentration and vitality have declined. However, because the causes of fatigue are not all the same, an approach of “the same tonic for anyone who is tired” is not appropriate.

What to check with Wonbang Sahyang Gongjindan

With Wonbang Sahyang Gongjindan, the composition of the prescription and the quality of the medicinal ingredients, especially whether musk and nokyong (deer antler) are used, should be checked carefully. Even if products appear to have the same name, there may be differences in composition, dosage, and manufacturing method, so a consultation is needed to determine whether it fits your current condition. We assess even more carefully if you have strong heat sensations, palpitations, insomnia, blood pressure issues, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

We recommend a consultation in these cases

  • When fatigue lasts a long time even after sufficient rest
  • When it is difficult to wake up in the morning and afternoon concentration drops significantly
  • When indigestion, decreased appetite, or frequent signs of a common cold occur together
  • When you have an existing condition or are taking medications and are concerned about choosing a tonic
  • If you have sudden weight loss, severe dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, paralysis, or decreased consciousness, we recommend receiving emergency care first

Gongjindan, Gyeongokgo, and Nokyong (Deer Antler) Tonic can all be considered to help with fatigue recovery, but their directions differ slightly. In consultation, I decide on a prescription by looking together at pulse diagnosis, interview findings, digestion, sleep, and stress. If you are already taking any medications, do not stop them on your own, and please let us know. Managing fatigue begins with calmly checking why your body is not recovering, rather than forcing yourself to endure by suppressing it.
