Fatigue & Herbal Tonics

What to Know Before Taking Sahyang Gongjindan

Sahyang Gongjindan is a Korean medicine herbal tonic prescribed after assessing fatigue and low energy. We have summarized how to take it, how to store it, and what to check from a clinical perspective.

In the clinic, I often hear that fatigue has been lasting for a long time. Even after sleeping, the body feels heavy, concentration decreases, and digestion is not what it used to be. If fatigue continues for 6 months or longer and affects daily life, it should not be viewed simply as a lack of rest; the body’s recovery capacity and daily rhythm should be assessed together. Sahyang Gongjindan is also a prescription considered in this context, tailored to constitution and symptoms.

What kind of prescription is Gongjindan?

Gongjindan is a prescription based on musk, deer antler, Cornus fruit, and Angelica root, among other ingredients. In Donguibogam, it is recorded as a prescription that considers the balance between kidney water and heart fire, and weakness of the five zang organs. In modern clinical care, we decide whether to prescribe it by assessing low energy and recovery status in people with accumulated overwork, stress, and lack of sleep.

Take it slowly in the morning on an empty stomach

In general, leave it at room temperature for a short time the night before so it is not too hard, then take it the next morning on an empty stomach after drinking a cup of lukewarm water. Rather than swallowing it right away, we recommend chewing it slowly so it mixes well with saliva before swallowing. Because musk is an aromatic medicinal ingredient with a strong fragrance, the process of taking it while noticing the aroma is also considered important.

Storage and ingredient verification are needed

If you plan to take it within a short period, it may be stored at room temperature or refrigerated. However, if it needs to be kept for 3 months or longer, freezing is safer. Because the quality of the medicinal ingredients and the preparation process are important for Gongjindan, it is necessary before prescribing to confirm whether genuine musk is used, the musk content, and whether it is a prescription prepared after diagnosis and compounding by a Korean medicine doctor.

We recommend a consultation in these cases

  • When fatigue lasts for a long time and is accompanied by headaches, muscle pain, reduced appetite, abdominal pain, or sleep disturbance
  • When you have an underlying condition or are taking medications, so medicinal ingredient selection needs to be approached carefully
  • When you are preparing for pregnancy, may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding
  • When sudden paralysis, decreased consciousness, severe chest pain, or difficulty breathing is present, so you should use 119 or the emergency room first

Gongjindan is not a prescription that should be recommended in the same way to everyone without assessing the body. The duration of use and method can be determined only after checking the causes of fatigue, digestion, sleep, constitution, and current medications together. When starting an herbal tonic, I also explain that meals, sleep, exercise, and stress management should go together. Please calmly observe the signals your body is sending and, through necessary care, build a recovery plan that fits you.
