Fatigue & Herbal Tonics

Will Summer Herbal Tonics Be Lost Through Sweat?

When summer fatigue and loss of appetite are severe, there is no need to automatically avoid herbal tonics. Personalized management is important after checking constitution, digestion, and the presence of disease.

There is a question I often hear in the clinic every summer: “If I take herbal tonics when it is hot, won’t they all go out through sweat?” Many people push through the heat despite poor sleep, reduced appetite, and losing energy with even a little movement because of this common belief. I first recommend looking at how the body is currently becoming exhausted.

Sweat is not a pathway for herbal tonic ingredients to leak out

Sweating is a natural physiological response that regulates body temperature and supports Waste Product Elimination. It is difficult to say that sweating means the nutrients or meaning of the medicine that the body needs simply leave the body as they are. Rather, if you sweat a lot in extreme heat and thirst, fatigue, and listlessness continue, it is necessary to manage fluids and electrolytes while also looking at the consumption of energy and body fluids.

A body that runs hot and a body that is cold need different prescription directions

Not every case of summer fatigue calls for the same prescription. For people who heat up easily, sweat a lot, and feel very thirsty, we consider an approach that cools heat while replenishing depleted body fluids. On the other hand, for people whose hands and feet are usually cold, whose Digestion is weak, and who are prone to diarrhea after cold foods, it may be necessary to support spleen-stomach function and help hold onto energy that is easily depleted.

Herbal tonics are based on constitution-based care

Herbal tonics are not simply the idea of adding a “good medicine for the body.” Age, sex, physical strength, sleep, food intake, sweating patterns, stool condition, stress, current medications, and underlying diseases should all be checked together. For people being treated for diabetes, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, and the like, it is safer not to stop current medications on your own and to bring your medication list to the visit.

Summer Lifestyle Management should go along with it

  • Rather than drinking a lot of water all at once, drink it frequently in smaller amounts.
  • If you repeatedly eat cold foods and greasy tonic foods, your digestion may weaken further, so adjust the amount.
  • Avoid exercising in the middle of the day, and start with light walking or stretching.
  • If you do not get enough sleep, recovery from fatigue can be delayed, so keep a consistent bedtime.
  • Because food spoils easily in this season, pay special attention to storage and hygiene when cooking.

We recommend seeking care in these cases

If fatigue that does not improve with rest continues for more than 2 weeks, or if it is accompanied by loss of appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, severe thirst, or weight changes, it may not be only an issue of the body’s balance. If you have symptoms such as a high fever, decreased consciousness, severe dehydration, or paralysis, call 119 or go to the emergency room before visiting a Korean medicine clinic.

Summer herbal tonics are not an out-of-season choice; they are a choice that requires an accurate understanding of your condition. The approach may differ depending on whether your energy has been greatly depleted from enduring the heat, whether weakened digestive function makes absorption difficult, and whether you have more heat or more coldness. Rather than simply pushing through, we encourage you to calmly look at your current fatigue signals.
