Chronic Skin Conditions

Early Management of Adult Atopic Dermatitis

Adult atopic dermatitis can increase not only itching and inflammation but also stress in daily life. Early moisturizing, irritant management, and constitution-based care are important.

When I meet people with adult atopic dermatitis in the clinic, the first thing I often hear is, “I can’t sleep at night because it itches.” When it repeatedly appears on visible or folded areas such as the face, neck, and the inside of the elbows, it affects not only skin symptoms but also relationships and daily concentration. When I look at adult atopic dermatitis, I do not look only at redness on the surface of the skin. I also examine the daily rhythm in which itching repeats and the condition of the body.

Where does adult atopic dermatitis commonly occur?

Adult atopic dermatitis often appears on both sides of the neck, the face, around the eyes and mouth, and areas where the arms and legs bend. Redness, heat, severe itching, and dryness may accompany it. If scratching continues for a long time, oozing, scabs, scaling, pigmentation, and thickening of the skin may follow.

In the early stage, it may look like simple dryness. However, if itching continues even with moisturizing or the same area repeatedly worsens, it is better to check the degree of dermatitis progression and aggravating factors.

There is more than one aggravating factor

It is difficult to define the causes of adult atopic dermatitis as just one thing. Genetic predisposition, allergic reactions, weakening of the skin barrier, chronic inflammation, lack of sleep, stress, contact with irritants, eating habits, and digestive status can affect one another and cause symptoms to fluctuate.

That is why, even with the same moisturizer, some people feel more comfortable while others feel stinging or more itching. When the skin is sensitive, strongly scented products, frequent exfoliation, hot showers, and leaving sweat on the skin for a long time can become irritating.

In Korean medicine, we look at both the skin and the body’s condition

In Korean medicine care, we check the location and appearance of the lesions; the degree of oozing, dryness, and heat; sleep and digestion; sweating; stress responses; and more. Based on this, we decide on a direction to calm the skin’s inflammatory response and support circulation and recovery.

Depending on the need, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and pharmacopuncture may be included in the treatment plan. However, if you are already using topical medication or oral medication, do not stop it on your own. It is safer to let the Medical Team know about your current treatment and discuss how to adjust it.

We recommend a consultation in these cases

  • When itching wakes you often from sleep or makes it difficult to concentrate in daily life
  • When oozing, scabs, pain, or heat repeats or spreads
  • When it continues in areas that cause significant daily discomfort, such as around the eyes or mouth, the neck, or the hands
  • When the same area often recurs despite moisturizing and lifestyle management
  • If pus, severe swelling, or fever accompanies it, there may be a possibility of infection, so we recommend receiving medical care

Care you can start at home

  • Take short showers with lukewarm water, and apply moisturizer right after drying the skin
  • Before applying a new product broadly, try it first on a small area
  • After sweating, do not leave it for a long time; wash it off gently
  • Organize your daily rhythm so that lack of sleep and overwork do not repeat
  • When it itches, use a cold towel to soothe the area briefly rather than scratching hard

Adult atopic dermatitis is a Chronic Skin Condition that may improve and then fluctuate again depending on your condition and environment. The longer symptoms continue, the more sensitive the skin barrier may become. In the early stage, it is important to understand what irritants your skin is vulnerable to and to receive care that also considers your body’s balance. It is important to establish steady management and an appropriate treatment direction together.
